Sedimentation in Storm-Water Tanks: Bed Shear Stress Versus Bed Turbulent Kinetic Energy

Abstract: The lack of knowledge about flow and pollution in storm-water tanks remains a significant problem for their design. Efficiency and sediment spatial distribution measurements are compared with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulated results. Because the trap boundary condition does not take into account the fact that particles can be resuspended after the first impact on the bed, two threshold boundary conditions have been implemented and compared: the bed turbulent kinetic energy (BTKE) condition and the bed shear stress (BSS) condition. They both well describe the efficiency of the tank but only the BTKE condition well describes the spatial distribution of deposits on the bed for all the inflow velocities we have investigated.
