Abstract: The paper investigates the zone of flow establishment (ZFE) of tracer concentration field in a submerged round jet in stagnant environment or in a current. Time sequences of the jet concentration field are obtained from laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and analyzed by a number of statistical techniques to estimate the lengths of ZFE. It is found that the development of tracer concentration in the ZFE is more complicated that the simple picture of a constant jet exit level following by power law decay. Different estimates of ZFE lengths can be obtained using different criteria. The presence of a counter-flow or cross-flow is found to shorten the ZFE length.
