Abstract: The downstream boundary conditions of the Dongting Lake hydraulic forecasting model are difficult to simulate because of the complicated stage-discharge hysteresis in mid-stream of the Yangtze River and the complex river-lake relationships. The normal single-value rating curve method was found to be unsuitable in a forecasting mode. An adjustable rating curve technique was proposed to solve the boundary condition problems. This method considers both the hydraulic modeling results and observed data at the downstream boundary. The stage-discharge relationship can vary from time to time and over different forecast periods. This study discusses the technical details and compares the proposed approach to other technical approaches by using recent years of Dongting Lake and Yangtze River flood data. The adjustable rating curve technique can successfully solve the downstream boundary condition problems, making the application of the Dongting Lake hydraulic model feasible for real-time flood forecasting.
