Effect of a Short-Term Reservoir Flushing on Downstream Water Quality During Drought Season

Abstract: The impact of a short-term reservoir flushing on the downstream water quality of Daecheong Dam, which is located in Geum River of Korea, was studied on November 22, 2003. The outflow from the dam reservoir was increased from 30 ㎥/s to 200 ㎥/s within 6 hours for the purpose of the experiment. During the passage of the flushing flow, water samples were taken at several control points with a high frequency for water quality variables including BOD5 and nutrients. An unsteady river water quality model, KORIV1-WIN was tested using the observed data to evaluate its predictive performance for simulating the hydraulics and water quality variations during the flushing. The model showed very good performance in predicting the wave propagation and travel time of flushing flow. It also simulated the water quality variations of dissolved forms of nitrogen and phosphorus species with satisfactory, but revealed large deviations in simulating BOD5 possibly due to missing the effect of organic matters re-suspension from river bottom sediment during the wave front passage.
