Abstract: Several experiments were conducted in order to investigate macro-roughness arrangement influence on flow resistance. Results underlined the presence of an optimal macro-roughness spatial density value maximizing flow resistance. Laboratory results have been analysed in order to obtain an interpolating equation able to predict observed values. Relative submergence, spatial density and slope have been demonstrated to play a fundamental role to determine flow resistance value in case of macro-roughness presence. Predicting equation has been tested both on laboratory and field data showing a general good agreement. A comparison with some others predicting equations confirms the prediction reliability of the flow resistance equation here proposed.
