Regional Frequency Analysis of Annual Maximum Precipitation in South Korea

Abstract: Single-site analysis is not appropriate if the record length is shorter than target return period T. Sample sizes of annual maximum rainfall data in Korea are usually smaller than 50 years. Therefore, it is essential to use regional frequency analysis for estimating rainfall quantiles of more than 100 years return period of rainfall quantiles. In this research, regional rainfall frequency analysis is performed for annual maximum rainfall data of South Korea. Homogeneous regions are identified by cluster analysis. An appropriate distribution is chosen by goodness-of-fit test. The generalized logistic model (GLO) is found to be an appropriate distribution as a result of goodness-of-fit measure. Simulation experiments are performed to check the performance of three frequency analysis techniques such as at-site frequency analysis, index flood method, and regional shape estimation method.
