Abstract: The approach of combination of model experiment and numerical simulation is used to study the hydraulic characteristics of double-bend spillway. As the discharge is large and the spillway has two curved conduits in a short distance, and the slope of the spillway is steep and changed, the water surface elevation of the concave bank is much higher than that of the convex bank. Model experiment indicates that difference of transverse water surface is decreased by setting proper skew sills at the bottom of curved conduits, so flow pattern can be improved and investment of the project can be saved. Fluent software is used to simulate three-dimensional turbulence flow of double-bend spillway. Through numerical simulation, free water surface and velocity are obtained and computed results are in agreement with measured data. The study proves that double-bend spillway is feasible in practical projects.
