Abstract: Two types of second-order long waves can be generated by groups of two co-linear short waves with slightly different frequencies. The locked long waves propagate at the group velocities, whereas, the free long waves propagate at the shallow-water speed. The long waves generated by short wave groups over a sinusoidally varying topography are investigated in this study. It is shown that the free long waves can be resonated at certain condition. The effects of ambient currents are also examined.
