Abstract: In Shanghai, a new structure for beach protection, i. e. offshore pile dike, was introduced and an experiment at Hohai University was carried out to study its effect on wave dissipation. As an offshore dike is usually built in the surf zone, the study was focused on the impacts of water depth, pile height and dike structure. The bed velocity deduced by the transmitted wave was analyzed, too. The results show that the offshore pile dike not only can reduce the wave height, but also can change the wave status from a breaking wave to a shallow water wave. This can effectively decrease the wave power and prevent the beach from erosion. It can be concluded from this study that the offshore pile dike is an effective new structure for beach protection.
