Abstract: Multifunction surge tank has the effect of discharge diversion in normal operation process of water-turbine generator except the basic function as common surge tank. Its applying can lower project cost, save investment, increase energy output. In this paper the rate of diversions of tailrace surge tank was calculated and analyzed with the method combining the numerical simulation and experiment of hydraulic model according to the tailrace surge tank of FUZILING pumped-storage power station and the relation between rate of diversions and water level near the upstream of FUZILING reservoir dam was educed. The weir flow coefficient variation with the relative submergence degree was obtained through observation and analysis of overflow characteristic on the various power generation and pumping case of surge tank. Also, according to surge tank characteristic of flow diversion, observed and analyzed in detail the relations between surge tank safety water depth and pump discharge, and put forward that confirming safety depth should considered all of the operation cases in surge tank with the function of discharge diversion and the practical method to confirm the safety depth of surge tank was presented. The surge tank and water-turbine generator would operate more safely to confirm safety depth with this kind of method.
