Abstract: The flaring gate piers are combines with the stepped spillway and stilling pool. They form the united dissipation system. The flows behave obvious three-dimensional characteristic: first, due to the restriction of flaring gate piers, the flows forms water wings, whose interfaces are highly irregular; second, the jets separate from the first step so as to form the aerated cavity at the steps; third, there is ternary hydraulic jump in the stilling pool. The three- dimensional turbulent numerical simulation on it has not been reported. In this paper, the standard k~ε model is used to simulate the flows of this system. The number of the mesh cells is about 1. 13 million. The calculated results are compared with the experimental data, and they are in good agreement with each other. The study results show that this type dissipator is effective for the problem of energy dissipation of overflow with high water head, large unit discharge and low Froude number.
