Abstract: The flow pattern in a conduit is very important in hydraulic engineering. In this paper a popular commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software code – FLUENT is applied to model the flow characteristics in a conduit. In order to verify the effectiveness and suitability of FLUENT in simulating such fluid flow, different shapes and sizes of irregularities are tested against the various flow conditions. The velocity and pressure distribution around the irregularities and the incipient cavitation number σ of irregularities are numerically calculated. The simulated results are in good agreement with the available experimental data.
