Abstract: In order to clarify characteristics of tidal current and density stratification in the Ariake Bay, Japan, field observations on current and stratification by using shipboard ADCPs and multi factor profiler were carried out in various tidal conditions. As a result of this research, it becomes clear that relatively strong flow in the area close to the Shimabara Peninsula and this tendency is strengthened in spring tide than neap tide. Density stratification is weakened in this area by the strong flow. In addition, it is considered that this nonuniform horizontal profile of velocity with strong flow plays important role for longitudinal dispersion of substances.
