Abstract: Contraction scour can occur when the stream flow area is reduced, either by natural constraints (longitudinal bars, confluences, debris accumulations, etc. ) or hydraulic structures (bridge embankments, lateral banks, spur dikes, etc. ). Fig. 1 shows an example in which scour is mainly caused by lateral banks along the river and by the road approach embankments of two bridges in between the stream is narrowest. This paper is focused on scour processes in long contractions. Some experiments, typically lasted for days, were carried out at University of Basilicata in a straight rectangular channel. All the tests were run under steady flow and clear-water conditions. Experimental data were first compared with literature equations and after interpreted in the light of the densimetric Froude number.
