Abstract: Knowledge of the hydraulics of flow over vegetation is very important for the understanding of fluvial processes in river hydraulics as in coastal areas. In this paper the change of the boundary layer between the flow and soil through the influence of flexible vegetation is analyzed. At first the change of the velocity profile is studied. In the second part we present an experiment for the measurement of the roughness of the vegetation in a laboratory flume. The mathematical procedure for the computation of the roughness is explained in detail. We close with an evaluation of our results and a discussion of further steps and further goals of research.
