Abstract: A large number of reservoirs have been constructed since fifty years ago. At Present some of them have been functioning well and the other have some problem of sedimentation and among those reservoir a few number are seriously suffering from sedimentation. In order to countermeasure the problem of reservoirs sedimentation, effort has been made by Indonesian Government. The countermeasure has been done by means of reforestation of catchment areas, constructing some structures to measure sheet and gully erosion and constructing sabo (sediment control) structures along the river tributaries in the catchment areas. The function of sabo structures is to detain existing sediment deposit at the river bed, to store the sediment flowing from upstream, to control sediment discharge, to control river bed slopes and to protect river banks from sliding. A number of sediment control (sabo) structures have been constructed at the river tributaries in the catchment areas of the reservoirs. The sediment control structures which have been constructed show good results. It can be indicated that the rate of reservoir sedimentation after the construction of sediment control structures was lower than that before the construction of sabo structures. The author will explain the result of the surveys and propose the plan of countermeasures by applying sabo technology to decrease reservoir sedimentation.
