Abstract: In development of electricity supply system, development of hydropower plant capacity is one of the most important strategies in Iran. Many hydropower plants are under construction and study. These projects have been located in different basins. Karun system is one of the most important systems in hydropower plant development in Iran. In this system 9 HPPs have been considered cascade. One of them has been operated in 1978 that its capacity is 1,000 MW. The others are under construction and study. Sedimentation study in this System has important role. Sediment control strategies have not been applied in this system. Therefore by constructing new hydropower plant in this system, sedimentation would be one of the most problems in operating of them. Optimum sedimentation should be determined by using a mathematical model that maximize social profits or minimize social cost in operating of this system. This paper, after defining Karun system and its general information, introduces a systematic approach for modeling social profits, determine optimum level of sedimentation control in Karun system.
