Analysis on Velocity Lag of Sediment and Fluid in Open Channel

Abstract: In this report, the basic two-phase conservation Eq. s are applied to one configuration of sediment-laden flow in open channel flow. The classical approach assumes a Fickian format for the turbulent sediment dispersion in terms of the same velocities on sediment and fluid in the horizontal direction. However, the interaction between the fluid and sediment leads to the fact that the mean fluid velocity is always faster than the sediment velocity in the horizontal direction which is consistent with observations from many experimental investigations. A velocity lag analysis is performed by means of both the two-phase approach and the particle dynamics approach. The results show that in sediment-laden flows, the relative movement between the fluid and sediment is also controlled by the concentration gradient, the turbulence gradient and the sediment inertia (Stokes number). The computed velocity lag compares well with the experimental data from the literature.
