Abstract: The most rivers in the mountain area of Kii Peninsula in Japan are incised meandering ones. The meandering process of alluvial rivers is due to bar formation under depositing process, while the incised meandering in mountain area is formed under degrading process. In this paper, experimental study on incised meandering river is described. Experiments were carried out on the channel flow over cohesive bed. The bed material was composed of sand and clay. First, degrading process of straight channel over cohesive bed was examined. Secondly, the change of longitudinal-and plan view configurations of meandering channel with free boundary was observed. Following things were made clear; In the longitudinal configurations of channel bed, the steep slope section and the mild slope section appears alternately. The consequent wavy configuration in the longitudinal cross-section is not in phase with the meandering configuration in the plan view. The steep slope section plays an important role on the development of meandering configurations.
