Abstract: Based on the previous research results and according to the mass conservation principle governing the transportation and dispersion processes of sediment movement, this paper establishes a 3D equation for describing the distribution and variation of the average grain-size of suspended load, which is then simplified under the conditions of the 2D steady uniform flow and a river bed under the equilibrium state. Then, a relation is obtained between the average grain-size of suspended load and the corresponding sediment concentration along the vertical direction. Finally, a computation formula for calculating the vertical distribution of the suspended load’s average grain-size is put forward. The proposed formula is tested against the observed data and the result shows that this formula can accurately fit the observed vertical distribution of the suspended load’s average grain-size.
