Abstract: This paper reviews research results on the threshold of motion for non-uniform sediment particles. Investigation was carried out through experiments using non-uniform coal particles for threshold motion. A formula for calculating the velocity of threshold motion with consideration of both expose and hide effects was established and verified. This formula can be simplified to the formula for uniform sediment. The simplified formula gives very close predictions to conventional velocity calculation formula for uniform sediment, but agrees better with measured data for gravel bed conditions.
