Fluvial Processes of Nantong Reach on the Changjiang River

Abstract: This paper presents analysis of fluvial processes of the Nantong reach on the Changjiang River. Results show that upstream of Tongzhousha watercourse the channel tends to be stable, and East Tongzhousha watercourse will not change as the main channel. At present, the end of the Langshansha Bar is migrating downstream to a critical point due to the control effect of Xuliujing node, and it will continue to move westward; the sandy rear end of Xinkaisha Bar will continue to migrate downstream and rise at the same time; the outer edge of Xintongsha Bar will basically keep stable and the trench has a tendency of being silted up, providing a more favorable condition for the development of Xintonghaisha Bar; at the front of Haimen port, bar deposition and channel scour are observed; simultaneously the north branch still has a tendency of decline. The analysis of the river regime of Nantong reach shows that extraordinary floods can accelerate the change of erosion and deposition patterns of the bars and channels. However, with improvements in bank protection and regulation works, the whole Nantong reach will be kept stable.
