Abstract: Spurs, as river-training structures, are in vogue in different parts of the world. Though attempts were made to understand the mechanism of scour around the spur nose that determines stability of the structure, most work was restricted to solid spurs. One of the important aspects of the study on spurs is the scour around the spur nose. Surprisingly studies in this regard centered round solid spurs only and very little information is available on scour around permeable spurs. The paper presents a mathematical model, developed by integrating blockage ratio, permeability of spur and spur Reynold’s number. The model predicted temporal and equilibrium scour depths for solid and permeable spurs, similar to that available in literature for a cylindrical pier, with reasonable accuracy.
