Abstract: The Tongguan Reach on the Yellow River from Tongguan to Guduo. has a length of about20km. Average width is between 800m-2,500m. Main channel width is between 500m-1,000m. The slope of the reach is 0.02%. The cross-sections of the Tongguan Reach is relatively wide and shallow. The fluvial processes of the reach is affected by flow condition and the operation of the Sanmenxia Reservoir, etc. In the last 10 years, unfavorable condition of incoming flow has made the situation worse. In 2002, under the influence of the flood coming from the Wei River with hyperconcentration and small peak discharge, the Tongguan Elevation rose to 329.14m, the highest in history. Based on the flow condition and evolution characteristics of the reach, a scheme was made for dredging a small branch and achieve a bend cut-off. After several days, the discharge through the small branch increased a lot, and finally, it turned into a main flow, and the old channel dried up. Because of the shorter length of the reach and increasing slope, the Tongguan Reach was subject to erosion, which had an important influence on the change of the Tongguan Elevation.
