Abstract: In light of the effects of the Three Gorges Project on the mainstream waterway of the Yangtze River, together with the construction and development of the mainstream waterway and according to different navigation conditions and different types of rapids and shoals upstream and downstream of the Three Gorges Dam, this paper presents a systematic waterway improvement principle in sections, in stages and in steps. It is suggested that the favorable pattern of riffles and pools at medium and low water levels should be protected and stabilized timely, enabling the navigation channel to be in a good state of development. For unfavorable river regimes, it is suggested that the key locations should be controlled so as to be adapted to the development trend of the alignment of the channel. These are effective measures for improvement of the Yangtze River waterway.
