Abstract: A combined modeling approach for the sediment erodibility in Partheniades' erosion flux formula is presented. It consists of a predictor for the porosity of the graded bed material and an empirical formulation for the erodibility depending on the bulk density of the bed material. This approach is applied to simulate the morphodynamics of the mesotidal Jade-Weser estuary at the German coast of the North Sea. No measurements were available for the porosity in the system but the predicted ones seem to be reasonable. The variation of the erodibility and the resulting morphological changes show a much better agreement with natural morphological changes than overall constant values for the erodibility.
