Abstract: This paper studies the hydraulic and depositional characteristics of the Pearl River delta and its channel patterns by using laws and methods of subjects such as estuaries, river dynamics, channel evolution, sedimentary dynamics, dynamical morphology, and so on. There are three dynamic area, flood area, flood-tidal area and tidal area. Sediment of the Pearl River delta comes from sea and fluvial. There are two kinds of river network patterns, tidal pattern and fluvial pattern in the delta of the Pearl River. These fluvial channels could be divided into three grades, and the tidal channels could be divided into two grades, every channels has different evolutional rules and exploitation values. but with the delta protruding seaward, the fluvial dynamic area moves to downstream, these channels suffer from the dynamical effects of tidal area, flood-tidal area and flood area, and its developmental history is from formation to development, then die out.
