Abstract: In order to develop a deep channel in Yangtze Estuary, a regulation project has been put in practice by stages. In the feasibility study of the project, the sediment siltation in the channel was studied mainly by numerical model; meanwhile some physical models of sediment transport come to assist. Based on the numerical model of total sediment transport in the Yangtze Estuary, the annual siltation in normal condition and 10 days’siltation in adverse condition in each stage are predicted. The one-stage project was completed in March 2000 and the channel with 8.5m water depth has been formed by dredging. In this paper, the effect of project on siltation is analyzed and the siltation prediction is introduced. The quantity and the distribution of siltation in the channel measured in the first stage of project are compared with the predicted value by the numerical model. Thepractice of navigation channel shows that it can be maintained by dredging after the regulation project constructed.
