Abstract: The purpose of this study is to survey the confluence behavior of a tributary with hyperconcentrated flow entering the main river by applying digital image processing. The digital terrain data of depositional fans are calculated via coordinate transformation from the profiles extracted by laserlines. The measurement approach is described and preliminary results are presented. Finally, the qualitative analysis of fan formation process is also proposed based on the experimental results. Through the observation and discussion, the junction mechanism can be easily studied in the future. The realization of confluence phenomena will be helpful to actual application in river planning and management.
