Abstract: Being situated in the fluctuating backwater zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir, the Chongqing urban reach possesses distinctive dual features of reservoir and natural river. Sediment model experiments have shown that sediment deposition in this reach will increase accumulatively after impoundment of the reservoir. The sediments deposited near the banks will become thicker and wider. Sediment deposition will influence on harbors and ports, navigation, municipal infrastructures and ecological environment of the Chongqing reach. According to previous researches, the comprehensive measures were suggested, such as eco-environmental comprehensive treatment of the upper Changjiang, building upstream reservoirs to trap sediments, narrowing the flow to scour sand, improving harbors and ports, regulating reservoir banks and dredging navigable channels etc. These measures may reduce depositions and mitigate the influences of sedimentation on the harbors and channels along the Chongqing reach after the Three-Gorges Reservoir operation.
