Field Indentation Tests of Vertical Semi-Cylinder on First-Year Ice

Abstract: The paper contains description and results of the in-situ medium scale indentation tests in VanMijen Fjord of Spitsbergen in the March, 2013 and 2014, and in the Barents Sea in the May, 2013. Main purpose of the field investigations was to collect data on first-year sea ice compressive strength as related to the whole ice thickness. Effects of aspect ratio ܦȀ݄, ice temperature and indentation rate on the ice strength were studied. The experimental equipment has been designed and manufactured for the field works under the support of the SAMCoT project, and the test rig, consisting of two semi-cylinders, has been described in the paper. Also, the results of numerical simulation of the vertical semi-cylinder penetration into the ice sheet using 3D FEM approach and ANSYS software are presented. The calculated stress distributions in vertical and horizontal planes of the ice sheet in front of the indenter are presented. The effect of ice/indenter friction has been investigated numerically. Comparison of numerical results with the data from indentation tests in field conditions has shown good agreement in terms of indentation forces.
