Abstract: This paper introduces 2D discrete element method (DEM) simulations of laboratory scale direct shear box experiments on ice rubble. The modeled experiments were pseudo 2D and they were performed in a cold laboratory at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) while the simulations were run in Aalto University. First we validate the simulations by comparing simulation and experiment results. Then we use the simulations to study the phenomena behind the shear force records of direct shear box experiments. As our main result we demonstrate how the peak shear loads in the experiments are due to force chains within the ice rubble.
