Abstract: Ice jams usually occurs at the river bends of the Inner Mongolia Reach of Yellow River in the freeze up period. In this paper, based on the field observation of freeze up in the2013-2014 winter and the simulation of water flow in the Sanhuhekou bend, the freeze up process and characteristics were analyzed. The analysis showed the ice bridging started at the narrow position of river bend. Ice cover will develop to the upstream from there. Due to the cut off of the ice supply, open water can form at the downstream of river bend. The water velocities will redistribution after the freeze up to cause the bed morphology change. At the same time, the shape of ice cover toe was affected by the bed bathymetry. This study provides an insight on the freeze up and ice jam formation processes in the study reach.
