Abstract: Modelling of ice rubble is often based on the assumption of continuous material. However, ice rubble often includes only few hundred blocks and the continuum assumption may not be applicable. For continuum modeling, it is necessary to have a stress tensor that reliably describes the loading conditions imposed on the material. In this paper, we study the limit on ice rubble sample size for which such a stress tensor can be defined for uni-and biaxial compression loadings. We use the virtual experiments performed using by two-dimensional discrete element method and stress measures suitable for granular materials. The paper presents preliminary results on the sufficient sample sizes, and on the effects of stress levels and the choice of the point of stress calculation.
