Abstract: Peak flows in the Cache la Poudre River (Poudre River) are usually analyzed by using a single peak discharge for each year. It is the theme of this presentation that it might be better to divide the peak discharges into classes based on the underlying mechanism causing the peak discharge. In the Poudre River watershed there are four classes: 1) snow-melt, 2) snow-melt plus rain in the lower watershed, 3) thunderstorms in late July or early August, and 4) autumn tropical storms. The first three are probably accepted by many but the fourth is almost certainly controversial.
