On the Use of Surrogates to MIMIC the Stabilization Potential of Natural Biofilms at the Sediment-Water Interface

Abstract: Physical experiments on the sediment-stabilization potential of natural biofilms are time consuming (due to the long growing periods~one month) and the results are often only representative for the very specific environmental conditions of the investigated sites. This impedes the investigation of fundamental issues (like developing a unifying equation to predict biostabilization) and studies on long term effects (like the impact of climate change on biostabilization with a timescale of decades, or the impact of seasonality on biofilm mediated morphodynamics). The aim of this study is to explore the use of chemical surrogates as an alternative to natural biofilms in erosion experiments. For that purpose, experiments with different mixtures of surrogates and sediment in a small tilting flume are carried out and compared to the results of a study on natural biofilm erosion.
