Abstract: Basic field investigation of vegetation transition was performed on a large gravel bar with two lane meandering in Kinugawa River, Japan, where the gravel bar restoration project had been implemented. It is shown that most of vegetation on the gravel bar grew thickly in/around U-shaped zone. And, habitats of endemic species for gravel bed and those of alien species were affected by interaction between the U-shaped zone and flood flows. Based on this results, laboratory experiments were performed which examined the effect of the U-shaped zone on flow field and fine sediment movement. It is clarified that U-shaped zone affects whole flow field on a gravel bar, which affects fine sediment deposition and erosion.
