Abstract: The current methodology to set maintenance flow in Japan has two challenges. First, there is no method to consider flow variability. Second, the minimum flow volume to protect riverine organisms is set only focusing on fish habitats (riffle). In order to investigate current approaches to deal with these challenges, we reviewed 779literatures of environmental flow researches of 77 countries published from 2009 to 2016.
