Abstract: The European legislation requires implementing e-flow regimes as a mitigation environmental measure, to improve artificial water body ecological status and to achieve good ecological potential. As a Portuguese energy utility and concessionaire of several big dams, EDP was required by Portuguese Environmental Agency to install or reformulate devices to release those e-flows in 16 dams, aged from 25 to 70 years. This article illustrates the design methodology and the major solutions implemented. Highlight is made on multidisciplinary approach, especially on environmental aspects and civil, mechanical and electrotechnical engineering.
