Abstract: This research investigated the transport and mixing signature of two representative urban canals in Colombo and estimated the fraction of the assimilation capacity through greywater footprint (GWF) approach while quantifying the current water pollution levels (WPL). Both canals had sub-critical flows, and were with similar transport and mixing signatures. GWFs and WPLs were assessed with respect to six water quality parameters. Out of those highest GWF and WPL were observed for ammoniacal-nitrogenand nitrate-nitrogen and nitrite-nitrogen gave the lowest WPLs. A direct relationship between electrical conductivity (EC) and WPLs ofwas observed for both wet and dry seasons. This meant EC could be used as a surrogate variable for pollution of these canals.
