Abstract: The flow characteristics of a vertical slot-brush type fish pass were investigated experimentally in a 2 m wide rectangular flume which has a bed slope of 4% for discharges ranging between 160-180 L/s [1]. The experimental results showed that by placing bristle elements in the pool, the flow energy is effectively dissipated by the vibrations and bending of the bristles leading an about 30% reductions in the spatially-averaged resultant velocity. Also, this modification creates different migration corridors and favorable hydraulic conditions for distinct fish species. Case studies from Switzerland and Germany demonstrate that the implementation of the proposed innovative design in the existing vertical slot fish pass is cost efficient and ease of installation.
