Abstract: This study assesses the effect of adding background roughnesses on small fish upstream migration in a vertical slot fishway (VSFs). Tests on fish behaviour have been performed in an experimental flume of the Pprime Institute (University of Poitiers) with selected parameters such as the number of fish passages, the resting zones, the stabling times and fish trajectories. Comparison of three densities of macro-roughnesses (0%, 10% and 15%) and three fish species (Rainbow trout, common rudd and common Barb) is performed to estimate the effect of macro-roughnesses on the upstream migration efficiency.
