Abstract: With the rapid development of computer technology, Computer Image Processing (CIP) is now widely used in national defense, medicine, industry, agriculture, surveying and mapping, criminal investigation, natural resources and environmental science. Conventionally, in constructed wetlands, scientists have to cut plants to obtain their growth information for scientific research and engineering practice, which means that researchers can only study the growth information at the beginning and end of the life cycle of plants. Methods and software tools were developed to extract plant growth information for constructed wetland by collecting images of the plants intermittently using digital camera. The software was then applied to capture the temporal growth information of plants through edge detection and extraction technology. The projection area of the plants, which used to characterize the biomass of the plants, was then calculated. Experiments showed that the methods and software developed in this study can efficiently and non-destructively extract growth information of constructed wetland plants. The projection area of Pontederia cordata computed agreed well with manual measurement (R2=0.967). The software developed in this study has a user -friendly interface and integrated multiple functions. After verification of the method and software tool, they were used to investigate the performance of the constructed wetland plants, namely, Pontederia cordata, and Typha, by comparing the removal rate of TN, TP with plant growth information.
