Abstract: The ice-floes plunging under each other and into openings of hydraulic engineering structures process is a part of the ice pass ing through hydraulic engineering structures under construction, ice jams formation, operation of hydraulic engineering structures gates, operated within ice conditions mechanism. Initially the ice plunging process begins with plunging of single ice-floes which are stopped by a barrier such as an ice edge or floating ice blocks. Such ice mass accumulation changes the flow velocity field according to the newly formed resistance, thereby facilitating ice plunging. The ice plunging mechanism remains the same irrespectively of the barrier type. As barriers are considered: still ice cover, stopped separate ice-floes, frontal walls of structures w ith inlets and outlets, gates of hydraulic engineering structures, including floating gate. The ice plunging character depends on approaching velocities, water head before a barrier, s izes of holes for ice plunging and the submergence conditions downstream. The critical current velocity, at which ice-floes begin to plunge under a barrier, is determined under the formula...
