Abstract: Specific featu res of ice regime of the northern rivers of Eu ropean Russia whish are of dec isive importance for the hydroecological safety of the territory, as we ll as their spatial and temporal variab ility were stud ied using the up-to-date hyd rometeorological data. Trends of ice regime changes within the territory under study during recent decades have been revealed. Under low water situation au tumn ice and slashed ice drift takes mo re time, ice jams become more often and the freeze-up period less protracted. More often thaws resu lt in decreasing ice dep th and snow storage within river basins. Win ter break-ups are accompanied with ice jams and flooding. High water level during further freezing-up and the large amount o f slashed ice within the river channel increase the risk of catastroph ic ice jams during the break-up.
