Abstract: A bilateral Finnish-Japanese experiment “Hanko-9012” has been performed in four winters (1999–2002) at Hanko peninsula, Gulf of Finland with seasonal monitoring and intensive field campaigns. In this experiment, sea ice, oceanographic and meteorological data have been collected in order to investigate the structure and properties of the Baltic Sea brackish ice, heat budget and solar radiation. Here, these data are analyzed for the heat budget during the ice season. This work is ongoing and aims to cover the first three winter seasons (1999–2001). The station data allow us to estimate the components of the ice–atmosphere heat exchange, mass and heat content of the ice sheet, and oceanic heat flux to the ice bottom.
