Abstract: This paper deals with ice and water temperature conditions of some Finnish lakes. The study concentrates on two lakes, Kallavesi and Inari. Lake Kallavesi is situated in the Finnish Lake District and Lake Inari in Lapland. The water temperature profiles, ice thickness, snow ice thickness and ratio of snow ice of both lakes were analysed for the period 1981–2000. Also the correlation between air temperature sum and maximum ice thickness and NAO index and maximum ice thickness were calculated. In addition, the relation of heat content of water column in autumn and the ice conditions of the following winter were compared. The characteristics of observation sites and meteorological parameters were studied for the explanation of the water temperature and ice thickness behaviour in the observation sites.
