Abstract: There are still unexplored phenomena that affect scour depth. On a group of bridge piers protected with riprap sloping structure, appearance of intensified downstream scour hole has been noticed. Considering that the geometry of riprap sloping structure affects the downstream scour hole, new parameters have to be included in the empirical formulae. Since employing new parameters may lead to inaccurate scour estimation because their dependence on other parameters is unknown, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is performed in this work to select the most important parameters in the scour process before introducing new parameters. The aim of this work is to test the contribution of the new parameters to the total variance of the scour depth.
