Abstract: To measure the flow field of shallow open-channel flows not just above but inside the canopy composed of spheres, a top-viewing stereo Particle Image Velocimetry (sPIV) system was implemented for vertical longitudinal plane measurements. A glass plate was installed at the water-surface to avoid random image distortions from surface waves and fluorescent particles were used to filter out reflections on the spheres. To validate the use of the glass plate and a necessarily steep viewing angle of the stereo cameras, the instantaneous flow-field above the spheres' crests was measured simultaneously with a third side-looking camera for standard 2D PIV processing. 2D PIV measurements were also performed without a glass plate for comparisons to assess its impact on the flow.
