Abstract: A physical hydraulic model investigation was conducted to evaluate the performance of a stepped spillway. The spillway has 1V: 1H (45o) slope with continues steps cut into the surface of spillway from the crest to the toe. The steps on the stepped spillway could dissipate more energy and its can reduce the size of downstream stilling basins. This paper presents the results of the experimental studies on spillway of 45o and to find out the energy dissipation at conventional spillway and stepped spillway, the energy at the toe of stepped spillway, and the flow depth at the toe of stepped spillway due to the variations of steps number. Hydraulic model of 1V: 1H of smooth and stepped spillway implemented at laboratory with 100 cm high, 30 cm wide, 5 variations of flow rates from 1,61 l/s to 4,26 l/s, and 5 variations number of steps: 2,4, 8,16,32 steps. Graph representing the dimensionless relationship among parameters which are useful information for the hydraulic design of 1V: 1H stepped spillway.
